Events

Since its beginnings, a core purpose of European integration has been to bring about peace, stability and prosperity for the people of Europe. In this regard, the European Union is a great success. Today, and especially after the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the EU is also taking on a more active role outside its borders. The core question guiding our series of events is: how can the EU stay true to its core values and principles and best promote peace, democracy and the respect of human rights in its external affairs?

We are convinced that it is time to foster a broader debate on the EU's future role in the world and on the type of foreign policy we as citizens would like it to pursue. In particular, we suggest to look at ways to better include the experience and expertise that European civil society has to offer in terms of conflict resolution and peacebuilding approaches.

Under the title 'Peace Project Europe - civil society dimensions' our two events provide a platform to exchange, evaluate and coordinate different approaches and initiatives aimed at promoting peace. The organisations involved have also elaborated a set of policy proposals on how to better involve civil society in developing a European Union dedicated to peace. Thus, the series of events also include public events that enhance dialogue between civil society, relevant EU policy-makers and government officials working on EU matters.
